Runaway Ski Lift Coaster July 13, 2007 Yeow! I thought I was gonna have a stroke…You gotta go and ride the Griffon !!!! ————————————- ALPENGEIST — Busch Gardens Europe: This ski lift gone wrong thrills riders with six massive inversions and a top speed of 67 MPH. The B&M inverted coaster is consistantly rated among the top 20 steel roller coasters in the world, and takes guests on an incredible Alpine adventure. Awesome ride…lots of unexpected twists and turns. It has the speed, the loops, the drops to make it an excellent coaster. I’ll ride this one again for sure. The lines weren’t bad at all…15 minutes or so. It’s worth it.

The new Wildebeest water coaster at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari was named the Best New Ride in a Water Park and Best Overall Water Park Ride at the Golden Ticket Awards, presented during an Academy Awards-style ceremony at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in September.

In addition, Holiday World’s Voyage roller coaster was named the #1 Wooden Coaster on the Planet for the fourth year in a row.

Presented by Amusement Today publisher Gary Slade, the industry’s “best of the best” awards include theme, amusement and water parks from around the world. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari won a record six Golden Ticket Awards at this year’s ceremony.

For the eleventh consecutive year, Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari were named the #1 Cleanest Park, outranking such parks as Disney World, Kings Island, Dollywood, and Cedar Point. The parks also received #1 Friendliest Park award for the twelfth year.

“For these awards, we humbly thank our wonderful Hosts and Hostesses,” says park matriarch Pat Koch, who attended the ceremony with daughter-in-law Lori and grandson William. “It was a long, hot summer and they all worked together to keep smiling and keep cleaning.”

In an emotional tribute, the late Will Koch was honored as only the second inductee in Amusement Today’s Legends Series for being “a true visionary, leader and dear friend to the industry.” The park’s leader for more than two decades, Koch passed away unexpectedly in June at the age of 48. His brother and business partner Dan Koch continues as president and CEO.

Amusement Today is an international monthly trade journal for the amusement and water park industries, based in Arlington, Texas. The Golden Ticket Awards are determined by surveys submitted by well-traveled park enthusiasts from around the world.

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, in Santa Claus, Indiana, will open for the 2011 season in May, with the premiere of Rudolph’s Round-Up and Safari Sam’s SplashLand. For more information about the parks, visit Holiday World or call 1-877-Go-Family.

The Top 10 Amusement Parks in America

The deciding factor in selecting the top ten amusement parks in America was the answer to the following question: is the park worth a trip across country? If the park is in Florida is it worth the trip from the West Coast? If the park is in California is it worth the journey from Boston or Baltimore? If the answer was yes, the park qualified for inclusion.

The list also favored parks associated with popular franchises (Disney, Marvel Comics, Peanuts, and Sesame Street just to name a few). While this may put off some adults (okay, most adults), kids love the characters. And after all, amusement parks are all about the kids.

Besides the coasters, visitors can get all wet at their world famous water park, Soak City, or enjoy one of their many exciting live shows. Disneyland Resort contains two amusement parks, one is the famous Disneyland, which opened in 1955, and the other is Disneys California Adventure. The two parks, together with Downtown Disney and various hotels, attract more than 20 million visitors every year. So why is this legendary resort only number four on our list? Is it because of the song Its a Small World (After All) incessantly repeats during the ride of the same name? Yes.

SeaWorld is a classic. Since opening in 1964, SeaWorld San Diego has delighted visitors with exhibits, rides, and of course, its wonderful marine wildlife. SeaWorld is near the bottom of our list because it lacks the thrill rides of other amusement parks and it maybe too educational for some kids. Still, SeaWorld has enough things to do and see to make it a viable vacation destination.

Cedar Point Roller Coasters Part 2

Cedar Point is a 364 acre (1.5 km²) amusement park located in Sandusky, Ohio, US on a narrow peninsula jutting into Lake Erie. It currently holds the world record for most roller coasters with 17, one of them being the world’s second tallest and second fastest roller coaster, Top Thrill Dragster, which reaches speeds of 120 mph and a height of 420 feet. Cedar Point is also the only amusement park with four roller coasters that are taller than 200 feet (61 m). As of 2008 Cedar Point will be the only park in the world with 75[1] rides, becoming the park with the most rides. The park also has a mile-long white sand beach, two water parks (Soak City and Castaway Bay, an indoor waterpark (which also includes a hotel service), two marinas[2], several hotels, and “Challenge Park” featuring attractions such as go-karts and miniature golf. Known as “America’s Roller Coast”, Cedar Point has been voted “Best Amusement Park in the World” by Amusement Today for the past ten years. The park opened in 1870 and is the second oldest amusement park in North America after Lake Compounce. Cedar Point is the flagship park for Cedar Fair Entertainment Company (which is headquartered at the park) and, along with Valleyfair, was one of the original parks in the company. Cedar Point’s normal operating season runs daily from early May through Labor Day, then for nine weekends following Labor Day. Operating hours vary throughout the summer, however on most days the park opens at 10:00 am and

What Is the Difference Between a Theme Park and an Amusement Park?

Is Disney World a theme park or an amusement park? What about Cedar Point? Is there really a difference or are these two terms for the same thing? Does it even matter? Well, it may not be as important as some things out there, but theme park and amusement park enthusiasts will find it interesting, if not important. There’s a lot of confusion and mis-information out there. So, I thought I’d take the opportunity of this article to clear up some of the confusion.

Amusement Parks

Let’s start by defining the term “Amusement Park” first because amusement parks were the first to appear on the scene. By most definitions, the amusement park has been around for hundreds of years, since about the 16th century. It can be defined simply as a fixed location where multiple rides and attractions are assembled to entertain people. Simple enough.

Over the years, however, the definition of an amusement park has been clouded by changes in ride design, the invention of the automobile and the mass media, and the need for entertainment to match or exceed the expectations of its audience. These changes have caused upgrades and innovations of some parks and bankruptcies and closures at many others. But, one thing remained consistent, the parks, themselves, were always just collections of attractions, no matter how disjointed or tacky looking the collection appeared. Excellent examples of these include Coney Island in Brooklyn or the Riverview Park in Chicago…neither of which exist today by the way.

Theme Parks

While it’s debatable when the “theme park” was introduced, most experts believe that Walt Disney was its inventor. Disney was, however, highly influenced by Knott’s Berry Farm and the amusement parks of Europe. So, you could make the claim that Knott’s Berry Farm was the first theme park, but certainly Walt Disney took the theme park to a whole new level. So what makes a theme park different from an amusement park?

A true “theme” park consists of different themed lands or regions. Great efforts are made to create the illusion of another world or culture using landscaping, architecture, music, food, employees, and attractions. In a theme park the rides often take second place to the environment they are placed in. The more a park is able to take its guests out of the “real world” and into a world of fantasy, the truer the label “theme” becomes. Because Walt Disney used film directors instead of architects for the design of his park, he was able to create a true escape from reality, as if the theme park were a movie on a screen.

Theme Resorts Take Theme Parks to a Whole New Level

With the opening of Walt Disney World in Florida in 1971, the next step in the evolution of the theme park took place. Going beyond just the Walt Disney World rides and attractions, Disney combined the theme park with hotels, golf courses, water recreation, and (eventually) more theme parks. We like to call this the “Themed Resort”.

The idea of the theme resort is to attract guests and then keep them on your property for everything they could ever want or imagine. It is quite possible, with the advent of Disney’s Wide World of Sports – the sport fishing, water and field sports and tournament capabilities – that just about everything one could do on a vacation can now be found in one location. The themed resort has become a one-of-a-kind, one-stop shop for the dream vacation and the numbers are proving Disney’s idea to be the right kind of thinking. Disney is not alone in this market. Universal Studios in Orlando consists of two separate theme parks, hotels and dining to create the Universal Orlando Resort. Disney learned in the 80′s that keeping people close was the key to profits and that is certainly proving true.

Final Thoughts

It’s easy to become frustrated by comparisons that are commonly made between amusement parks and theme parks, even though those comparisons by definition shouldn’t be made. When someone says “I think Cedar Point is a much better amusement park than Disney World”, they’re correct in a sense because Walt Disney World is not an amusement park, and will never pretend to be a roller coaster enthusiast’s heaven. At the same time, however, they’re also wrong because they’re comparing apples to oranges. To make things even more confusing Cedar Point will sometimes call itself a theme park simply because they give labels to different areas of the park. Sorry Cedar Point. Theming is more than just labels.

So, the next time someone says they enjoyed Dollywood or Six Flags much more than Disney World, don’t bother to argue. They may as well say they enjoy sushi more than a bicycle.

MVP Helps Create One Of The World’s Largest Amusement Parks in Korea

MVP Helps Create One Of The World’s Largest Amusement Parks in Korea

Fort Lee, NJ (PRWEB) August 20, 2006

Korea is now the 10th largest economy in the world. They are superior in producing top quality computer games, digital displays, ships and mobile phones.

Korea is also known for producing some of the best athletes in the world. One such athlete is Hines Ward. Korean American Hines Ward made the successful touchdown at this year’s super bowl leading his team the Pittsburgh Steelers to victory. His forty three yard touchdown earned him most valuable player honors. The people of Korea were rooting for him. Hines Ward is very proud of his Korean upbringing which produced his strong work ethic. In fact, his Korean name is tattooed on his arm.

Upon winning the super bowl, Mr. Ward stated that he wished to go to Disney World. It seems that Mr. Ward is not satisfied with the amusement parks in the United States and thus plans to build an amusement park in his ancestral home of Korea. The name of the park will be the “Hines Ward Sports and Entertainment Park”. It is not a shock that a superior football player would choose to build a superior amusement park in a magnificent country such as Korea.

The Korean media has stated that the Korean MVP has created a corporate body with the purpose of building an amusement park that would be four times the size of Disney Land. The theme park will include a golf course, swimming area, tennis courts, rock climbing facilities, movie theatres and a “World National Boulevard” featuring sections from famous boulevards around the world, and an international food court with varieties of cuisines around the world.”

Chair-O-Plane Ride (Ground View)

The Chair-O-Planes, sometimes called a swing carousel or wave swinger, is a fairground ride that is a variation on the carousel in which the chairs are suspended on chains from the rotating top of the carousel. As the rotation speed of the Chair-O-Planes increases, the chairs are thrown outwards by centrifugal force. On some versions, particularly on the Wave Swingers the rotating top of the carousel also tilts for additional variations of motion. This type of swings ride was present at even the earliest amusement parks. At Idora Park in Oakland, California, in 1908, the ride was called Flying Swing, but appears to be the same principle. or wave swinger, is a fairground ride that is a variation on the carousel in which the chairs are suspended on chains from the rotating top of the carousel. Knoebels 2009.flv

Knoebels is one of America’s greatest traditional amusement parks. Located in Elysburg, Pennsylvania (roughly three hours almost due west of New York City) has a collection of great, classic rides for all ages. Currently operating, the park has three roller coasters – a kiddie coaster, and two great wooden coasters. There is a wooden bobsled coaster (a ride that hasn’t been seen in 40 years or built in 70) of which its opening has been delayed for three years due to many unforseen problems of resurrecting a ride of this style, And, awaiting construction, is the Black Diamond – a mine themed wild mouse coaster that has been rescued from the Jersey Shore. It is awaiting redesign of the structure to meet current building codes. But this park is not just known for its coasters, it is known for it’s food. This park has been voted the best amusement park for food, seven years in a row by Amusement Today. AND the food is very affordable. Overall, this park is very pleasant, and a great place to visit. It also has a very well rounded collection of flat rides, and a nice scenic mountain top sky ride tour. OMG the food is amazing, I can’t say enough of it. I had some crocodile meat, and it’s actually really good. It tastes like a mix between chicken and scallops. And apparently, it’s a very lean and high protein cut of meat. Oh, yeah, and they have white Birch Beer. I had red Birch Beer a couple of times, this was weird.
